Austin set to extend eviction moratorium

Paying rent

AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin renters will have a few more months of reprieve from eviction due to the ongoing pandemic, Mayor Steve Adler indicated during a City Council meeting Thursday.

Adler indicated during Thursday's council meeting that he'll extend an order prohibiting evictions that has been in place since March.

"I anticipate extending the current order protections against evictions," Adler said in a statement later Thursday. "The data shows eviction actions like ours save lives. We are working with Travis County on continuing protections in the interest of public health, while also further pursuing changes to better address the impact on landlords."

While Adler has the power to pause evictions, the order does nothing to stop unpaid rent payments - meaning tenants' debt will come due eventually, once evictions are allowed to resume.

In a related move Thursday, council voted to extend an ordinance that creates a 60-day waiting period for renters to come up with their delinquent payments. That ordinance now extends through March 5, 2021.
