Austin's New Year celebration goes virtual

Austin's New Year 2020

AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin's traditional New Year's Eve events at Vic Mathias Shores won't be taking place in 2020 due to the coronavirus, but a virtual event is taking its place this year.

The city and a number of local venues have partnered to produce a pre-recorded Austin's New Year 2020 special, aiming to bring some Austin flavor to the holiday while supporting Austin's event and music industries and allowing everyone to participate for free while staying home and staying safe.

The special, which will air at 8 p.m. Thursday night, features performances from 12-time Austin Music Award winner Gina Chavez, Texas native and Billboard Country Airplay chart-topper Parker McCollum, and headliner and Austin native Shakey Graves.

In all, eight local musical groups will perform at five local music venues, along with appearances by Austin Mayor Steve Adler, City Manager Spencer Cronk, and Chief Economic Recovery Officer Veronica Briseno.

The special will be broadcast locally on KBVO-TV, as well as on the city's ATXN cable channel and social media platforms.
