AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Travel on Interstate 35 through much of Austin was snarled during the early afternoon hours Thursday as authorities worked a "critical incident" near 51st Street.
Austin-Travis County EMS first tweeted about the incident just before noon. First responders worked for more than two hours to clear the scene, with traffic finally opening back up just after 2 p.m.
In addition to the interstate's mainlanes, traffic on Koenig Lane and US Highway 290 East was also impacted, including the flyovers connecting those roads to I-35.
Traffic backups extended all the way to Parmer Lane and Ben White Boulevard, prompting officials to suggest taking MoPac or State Highway 130 as an alternate route.
