AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt is stepping down to run for Texas Senate.

Eckhardt made the announcement during Commissioners' Court Tuesday afternoon, saying she is running for the District 14 seat being vacated by Kirk Watson. Commissioners accepted her resignation and appointed former county judge Sam Biscoe to serve in an interim capacity.

Eckhardt was elected as Travis County's first female county judge in 2015, and was recently elected to a second term in 2018.

Watson's seat has so far attracted two candidates who have officially announced. In addition to Eckhardt, State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez announced his candidacy over the weekend.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has not yet called a special election for the seat.
