Follow-up mosquito testing in WilCo comes back positive for West Nile

WILLIAMSON COUNTY (Talk1370.com) -- Follow-up sampling of mosquitoes around a southwest Williamson County park have tested positive for West Nile Virus, county health officials announced Thursday.

The Williamson County and Cities Health District said it set up two expanded trap sites after last week's positive sample was detected near the Southwest Williamson County Regional Park near FM 1431 and County Road 175.

The two expanded traps came back with positive results today, while the original trap tested negative, officials said. No other samples were found to be positive from routine trapping this week.

Health officials strongly encourage residents to remain vigilant about protecting themselves from mosquito bites and preventing mosquito breeding on their personal property, reminding residents that mosquitoes can't breed without standing water.

Residents should also treat ponds, rain barrels, or other stagnant water that can't be drained with a larvicide.

Officials say county parks staff will continue their mosquito control efforts with the treatment of standing water with larvicide. WCCHD will continue enhanced monitoring and expanded testing, along with increased public outreach and education.

The last human case of West Nile Virus in Williamson County was in 2017, officials said.
