SAN MARCOS, Texas (Talk1370.com) -- Hays County voters will have their say on a $75 million bond proposal for new parks, protection of open spaces, and preservation of natural areas this November.
County commissioners approved the referendum Monday, which will be placed on the November 3 ballot.
"This may seem like an unlikely time for a bond election, but Hays taxpayers and voters deserve to have their say on this important decision." Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra said in a statement. "We have great projects and opportunities in front of us right now and will likely have historic voter turnout in November. So yes, let the people speak."
The proposed measure would also protect and conserve the county’s unique natural landscapes, provide flood mitigation and storm water management, protect water quality and improve endangered species habitats.
The proposal is based off of recommendations from the Hays County Parks and Open Space Advisory Commission (POSAC), a 10-member citizen commission appointed by commissioners. POSAC members reviewed 18 projects submitted by municipalities, non-profit organizations, and land trusts working with landowners, along with several Hays County projects. 16 projects were ultimately recommended for some level of funding.
County officials say despite the economic uncertainties created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the county has been "blessed" with ongoing financial stability and expectations of continued growth. Bonds for the project will also not be sold until commissioners are comfortable with current and projected economic conditions.
