HAYS COUNTY (Talk1370.com) -- Hays High School is considering a possible change of its long-time "rebel" mascot, officials announced Tuesday.
Hays CISD officials said in a statement Tuesday that the district intends to conduct a survey of the Hays High community, including students and staff, to gauge their sentiment on a potential change. "Students and staff at the campus are the individuals who have to live with the campus mascot every day. Their voices must weigh heavily in the discussion surrounding the rebel mascot," officials said.
The survey, which officials hope to begin as early as next week, will include all students who will attend the school in the 2020-21 school year, as well as staff and employees.
In the district's statement, officials noted the controversy surrounding the 2015 removal of Dixie as the school's fight song, when district administrators unilaterally made the decision to change without involving the student body. Officials say that will not happen regarding the mascot.
