CEDAR PARK, Texas (Talk1370.com) -- A nearly 18-hour standoff in a northwest Cedar Park neighborhood came to a peaceful end Monday morning, officials said.
The subject and his mother, who was one of three hostages during the standoff, both walked out of the home in the 2300 block of Natalie Cove around 9 a.m. Monday morning. Two other hostages were released just before 8 a.m. Monday morning.
Cedar Park Interim Police Chief Mike Harmon said officers had been called to the home on Sunday afternoon just after 3 p.m., when the subject's mother called and told dispatchers that her son had kicked in the door and was acting very aggressive.
When officers arrived and attempted to enter the residence, they were met with gunfire. Officers were able to return fire; Harmon said it wasn't clear if the subject was hit.
The officers were able to get to safety and call for help; Harmon said all three sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the officers were released from the hospital Sunday night; a third underwent surgery Monday morning.
Harmon said the subject is in his mid 20s; based on conversations with the subject and family members, Harmon said there appear to be some mental health issues involved. After shooting the officers, the subject barricaded himself inside the home with the three other family members.
Harmon said the department has a history of responding to the residence; further details weren't immediately available.
"We want to end this peacefully, for everybody involved," Harmon said, speaking directly to the subject through the media. "The officers that were shot are fine. They've received medical attention, they don't have life-threatening wounds. That's important to know and to understand that. So please, if you're listening to this, please come out and surrender yourself peacefully so that we can resolve this situation tonight."
Harmon also blasted social media speculation surrounding the case. "There has been a lot of social media flying around," Harmon said, "people putting out there their own perspective on what has happened. A lot of it is not true. The most accurate and truthful information that you will receive will come straight from the Cedar Park Police Department."
Residents were being asked to avoid Bagdad Road between Osage Drive and New Hope Drive. Harmon said some homes immediately surrounding the scene had been evacuated as a precaution.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott reacted to the shooting in a statement. "Our hearts are with the police officers who were injured while protecting the Cedar Park community this afternoon," Abbott said. "We must never take for granted the service and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers, and the State of Texas stands ready to provide the support and resources needed to bring justice to those involved."
