AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin Police are investigating after an officer-involved shooting on the city's east side Tuesday afternoon.
According to Austin Police Chief Brian Manley, shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force were attempting to serve a federal arrest warrant in the 6100 block of Manor Road. The warrant was for a probation violation for carrying a prohibited weapon.
After 11 a.m., officers began to make an approach on the suspect, who Manley identified as 31-year old Deonte Lee Rogers, in the apartment complex courtyard. Rogers ran from officers with another person, firing at officers as they rounded a corner headed east. Two members of the task force, both Austin Police officers, returned fire. It's unknown if Rogers was hit by any of the shots, but he was able to jump a fence and disappear into the woods.
Manley said a pistol was found in the parking lot that is believed to be the weapon Rogers is believed to have used to fire at officers. It's unknown if Rogers has access to any other weapons; anyone who knows anything about his whereabouts is urged to call 911 immediately and to avoid making contact.
Rogers is described as a Black male with dreads, standing 5 feet 11 inches and weighing around 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a dark shirt with a design on the front and gray shorts that were below his knees. The person Rogers fled the scene with is described as a Black male wearing a black tank top and shorts.
Residents in the immediate area received a reverse 911 call advising them to stay indoors, and Austin ISD officials put nearby Pecan Springs Elementary is currently on "lockout" status as the police search was ongoing.
Both officers have been with APD for several years, with one serving for 11 and a half years and the other serving for nine and a half years. Manley said both will be placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure following any officer-involved shooting.
In addition to APD's Internal Affairs investigation, the Office of Police Oversight is also looking into the shooting along with the FBI. Because the officers were members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, they were acting as deputized federal agents and therefore Rogers may have committed a federal offense by firing at them.
