WACO, Texas (Talk1370.com) -- Billy Joe Shaver, country music songwriter and part of the "outlaw country" movement of the 1970s, died Wednesday at the age of 81.
According to media reports, Shaver suffered a major stroke Tuesday morning, and was taken off life support Wednesday morning at a Waco-area hospital.
Born in Corsicana in 1939, Shaver lived primarily in Waco. His debut album, "Old Five and Dimers Like Me," was released in 1973.
Shaver recorded more than a dozen albums himself, along with writing songs for artists including Willie Nelson and Patty Loveless.
In 2006, he was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.
The news comes just days after the passing of Jerry Jeff Walker, another leading figure in the outlaw country music movement.
