AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Police say an argument prompted a deadly shooting in a southwest Austin homeless camp over the weekend, with a suspect now in custody.
Austin Police were called to the 5900 block of South MoPac, along the northbound frontage road, just before 9 a.m. Sunday morning. A Sunset Valley police officer had called in a report from a complainant about a deceased person in a homeless camp.
According to the original report, there had been a shooting in the camp on Friday night. Officers found the victim, identified as 29-year old Shawn Thomas Eaton, lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest. Eaton was pronounced deceased at 9:51 a.m.
Homicide detectives, through interviews with witnesses, discovered that Eaton had gotten into an argument with the suspect, identified as 41-year old Damon Richard Boyd. Witnesses told police the argument ended with Boyd shooting Eaton.
Detectives obtained a murder warrant for Boyd, who was taken into custody Sunday evening without incident. He is currently in the Travis County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
Detectives are asking anyone with video or information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers at 512-974-TIPS.
