AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin City Manager Spencer Cronk will present his proposal for next year's city budget Monday afternoon.

The virtual presentation for the fiscal year 2021 budget will begin at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon.

"This is going to be the most challenging budget that we've ever put forward," Cronk said, "but what I also see is the budget with the most opportunity, because this allows us to think very differently about how we've done things in the past."

With the coronavirus pandemic continuing to disrupt the local economy, the city could be facing a significant shortfall.

Under the state disaster declaration, the city can also go over the 3.5 percent property tax cap passed by the Legislature last year - all the way up to 8 percent.

Two public input sessions will be held on July 23 and July 30, while two council work sessions will be held on July 28 and August 4. The final budget, along with next year's tax rate, are set to be adopted on August 12.
