AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Elon Musk may be making good on a Tweet he posted last week - at least as far as bringing Tesla manufacturing activity to Texas.
A report Friday afternoon from Electrek, a news website covering electric transportation and sustainable energy, says that the Tesla CEO has chosen Austin as the site for its next factory, citing a "reliable source."
The Terafactory, the report says, would produce Tesla Model Y vehicles, and eventually would produce the company's upcoming Cybertruck electric pickup truck.
Two other reports, from the Associated Press and CNBC, indicate that Austin and Tulsa, Oklahoma are both said to be under consideration.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, in an interview Tuesday with KAUZ-TV in Wichita Falls, said he has had conversations with Musk about bringing Tesla to Texas. "I’ve had the opportunity to talk to Elon Musk and he’s genuinely interested in Texas and genuinely frustrated with California," Abbott said. "We just need to wait and see how things play out."
The Electrek report indicates this particular development isn't related to Musk's recent threat to move manufacturing activity out of California; instead, the automaker's previously announced plans to build a factory for its Cybertruck in the "central United States." Nonetheless, Musk has recently been in a dispute with California officials over reopening the company's plant in Fremont, California, which has been shut down for some time due to the coronavirus.
The company's Fremont plant employs some 10,000 workers.
Musk wants development of the new plant, according to the Electrek report, to proceed quickly - posibly producing vehicles by the end of 2020.
