Study: I-35 through Downtown Austin most congested in state

Austin Interstate 35 traffic downtown

AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Central Texas is home to another top ranking - this time, it's home to the most congested roadway in the state.

Interstate 35 through downtown Austin has taken the top spot on 2020's list of Texas' most congested roadways, up from the number 2 spot last year. The annual survey, a partnership between the Texas Department of Transportation and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, has been conducted since 2009.

Rounding out the top five are Houston's West Loop (I-610) and Southwest Freeways (I-69), Dallas' Woodall Rodgers Freeway (SS-366), and Houston's Eastex Freeway (I-69). The next highest ranking stretch in Central Texas is Interstate 35 between Slaughter Lane and Ben White, which ranks 12th across the state. MoPac Boulevard, between U.S. 183 and the southern intersection of Loop 360, rounds out the top 20.

Officials said the 2020 report is based on data from the 2019 calendar year, before the COVID-19 pandemic and related shutdowns began to impact congestion in many areas across the state.

"Unfortunately, for drivers in central Texas, congestion on I-35 in Austin is now the worst choke point in the state. But relief is on the way since the Texas Transportation Commission recently included the I-35 Capital Express Project in TxDOT's 10-year plan, that will advance project development and construction," Texas Transportation Commission Chairman J. Bruce Bugg, Jr. said in a statement. "The I-35 Capital Express Project, which is a statewide strategic priority, underscores the need for continued investment in transportation so we can keep up with the continued growth that makes Texas one of the top places to live and do business."

The study estimates the congestion on I-35 through the downtown area costs Texans roughly $288 million each year.

95 of the top 100 congested roadways are in the state's five most-populated TxDOT districts - Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio.
