AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Travis County tax officials say they're temporarily suspending legal action against those with delinquent property taxes in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tax Assessor-Collector Bruce Elfant made the announcement Monday afternoon. "This is a time of extreme financial uncertainty, and we understand that filing delinquent tax lawsuits and conducting foreclosure sales would place an even bigger burden on these county residents so we are temporarily suspending our collection efforts," Elfant said.
State law does not allow for the county to waive penalties and interest - that can only happen if the state issues a waiver. For that reason alone, Elfant encourages anyone who can to continue making their property tax payments.
"Don't forget paying your property taxes is how we keep the county, cities, schools, hospitals and emergency personnel operating," Elfant said.
Anyone currently on a payment plan for property taxes that needs to renegotiate its terms, or wanting to set up a payment plan, can call 512-854-9473 or e-mail TaxOffice@TravisCountyTX.gov.
