AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- New data from Yelp shows nearly 1,500 Austin-area businesses have closed during the coronavirus pandemic.
The report, which includes both temporary and permanent closures, looked at closures between March 1 and July 10. 1,449 businesses in the Austin-Round Rock metro were closed at some point during that period; out of that group, 155 restaurants have closed forever, while 72 retail businesses have closed for good.
Restaurants have been hit the hardest, according to the report, with 60% of businesses nationwide reporting permanent closures. Shopping, retail, and bars have also been hard-hit, with more than 40% of those closures reported as permanent.
The report also looked at metro areas with the highest closure rate per 1,000 businesses across the country. The Austin-Round Rock metro area ranks 14th, with Honolulu, San Francisco, and Las Vegas making up the top three.
