Is there a polite way to ask loved ones about their COVID vaccination status?

Have you felt jealous watching friends and neighbors get their vaccinations while you’re still waiting for your turn?

As more states expand their eligibility guidelines for the COVID-19 vaccine, there is one question you may feel inclined to ask before visiting with family and friends: Are you vaccinated for COVID-19?

Dr. Philip Muskin, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, told Today that asking someone if they received their vaccine can sometimes feel personal.

How can you ask someone if they've received their COVID vaccination?

Before asking, it may be important to check your loved one’s social media account. All across the internet, people have been posting photos with their vaccination cards. However, if there isn’t any proof, it is essential to ask.

"When you’re lacking information you have fear and anxiety," Muskin said. "The delicacy of this does depend upon the situation, and the situation is always going to change. ... Maybe it's not casual conversation, but it's something that can be discussed.”

Muskin also shared that it is best to know someone’s vaccination status if you’re indoors and not wearing face masks.

"Prepare for their response, when you ask the question," he said. "Be prepared to say, 'Well, we're going to be in a car together for an hour. Do we need to wear our masks?'"

Here are three simple steps to follow before you ask someone about their vaccination status:

• Explain why you’re asking (you’ll be meeting indoors, kids are not vaccinated, etc.).
• In advance, consider that someone may not want to disclose this information to you.
• Come to a resolution together about whether mitigation methods need to be followed or not.
