AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- A 17-year old is dead and an investigation is ongoing after what officials called a "gun battle" broke out between two groups of people on Sixth Street early Saturday morning.

According to Austin Police chief Joseph Chacon, the incident happened at the intersection of East 6th Street and Sabine Street around 1:15 a.m. Saturday.

Chacon said two officers were about a block away from the scene conducting a DWI stop when they heard the gunfire. They ran towards the scene, at which point one of the officers fired his weapon. The suspects fled the scene.

A few minutes later, officers located a 17-year old Black male with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

"Witnesses were located that advised that this appeared to be a dispute, and ultimately a gun battle between two different groups of individuals and multiple weapons were observed," said Chacon.

Police don't know if the 17-year old was shot by the officer or the others shooting. The officer involved is a 4-year veteran of the department, and has been placed on administrative duty pending an investigation. Chacon said the officer's body camera was recording during the incident.

Officials are urging anyone who either witnessed the incident, or has video of the shooting, to call Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477, or call 911.
