At least 5 killed, 11 injured in massive pileup on Interstate 35 in North Austin overnight

Officials say at least 17 vehicles were involved in the crash near Parmer Lane

AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- At least five people were killed and 11 others were sent to the hospital after a pileup crash on Interstate 35 late Thursday night, officials said.

Austin Police say the crash happened in the southbound mainlanes of Interstate 35 just north of Parmer Lane around 11:20 p.m. Thursday evening. At least 17 vehicles were involved in the crash.

Austin-Travis County EMS says its medics pronounced five victims deceased on the scene, including an infant, another child, and three adults. 11 other patients were transported to nearby hospitals, some of them with serious injuries.

The southbound mainlanes of I-35 are expected to remain closed for several hours, according to TxDOT.
