(Talk1370.com) -- In your Morning Headlines for April 21: Austin Police are investigating a double homicide on the city's east side, and a search for a missing swimmer in far West Austin turns to recovery.
Eastside Double Homicide: Austin Police are investigating after two people were killed in east Austin Sunday night. APD says officers were called to the 2600 block of Aldrich Street, just east of I-35 & 51st Street near the AISD Performing Arts Center, around 9:30 last night. When they arrived on the scene they found two men with life-threatening injuries. Despite life saving measures, both men were pronounced deceased on the scene. That investigation remains ongoing; it’s the city’s 18th and 19th homicides of the year.
Search For Swimmer Turns To Recovery: The search for a missing swimmer Sunday evening at Emma Long Metropolitan Park will resume this morning. Austin-Travis County EMS says they received a call about that adult swimmer who had failed to resurface just before 7pm; after about an hour, first responders shifted their efforts from rescue to recovery. EMS, Star Flight, and Austin Fire crews all responded to the scene. Austin Fire tells us 28 firefighters responded to the scene to assist with the search. That effort is set to resume again this morning.
Fast Track For School Choice: The school choice bill passed by the Texas House last week could be headed to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk sooner than expected. Both Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and State Sen. Brandon Creighton said Friday they’ll recommend the Senate accept the House version of Senate Bill 2 without making any changes; that could happen as early as tomorrow. Education savings accounts have been one of Abbott’s legislative priorities this session.
Cause Revealed For NW Austin House Explosion: The Travis County Fire Marshal’s Office says a “substantial” propane leak led to a house explosion in northwest Austin last week. That explosion destroyed a recently finished home, significantly damaged a neighboring home, and damaged more than two dozen other properties. The fire marshal confirmed investigators’ initial indication that no suspicious or criminal circumstances were present. Two people remain hospitalized in critical condition from injuries sustained during the blast.
24/7 Weather Center Forecast: Bit of a cool start Monday morning, but we'll warm back up quickly with lots of sun on what will likely be the driest day of the week. High of 88; rain chances build in starting late Tuesday.
