Deadly Shooting in Downtown Austin: Austin Police are investigating a deadly shooting in downtown Austin Monday night. That shooting happened around 7:30pm near Third and Nueces; police received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired, and found a man with obvious signs of trauma. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries. APD says they have a person of interest who’s been taken into custody; it’s the city’s 13th homicide investigation of the year. Cap And Stitch Funding: Austin City Council members are set to take a hard look at what financing options might be available for cap and stitch efforts as TxDOT rebuilds Interstate 35 through downtown Austin. That plan is estimated to cost $1.4 billion dollars, with a firm commitment of roughly $250 million needed by next month. The funding crunch comes as council is also looking at potential bond items that could go before voters next year, with the city running up against limits in just how much they can borrow without impacting the city’s credit rating.
Special Election Set For Texas' 18th: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has set a date for a special election to fill the Texas congressional seat left vacant by the death of former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner last month. That special election is set for Tuesday, November 4, one of the state’s two uniform election dates this year - in a statement, Abbott called into question the ability of Harris County to run the election properly, citing past failures. It’ll be the second special election in the 18th Congressional District in the last year, after Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee died after a battle with cancer in July of 2024. Jackson Lee’s daughter won that special election, serving roughly seven weeks between election day and the end of the term.
