(Talk1370.com) -- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and other opponents of a ordinance aiming to limit enforcement of marijuana offenses in San Marcos have won a key court victory
Court Blocks San Marcos Marijuana Ordinance: Opponents of a San Marcos ordinance that aimed to end low-level marijuana enforcement in the city won a court victory last week, with the state’s Fifteenth Court of Appeals issuing a ruling saying the ordinance violates state law. That ordinance was passed by voters in 2022, but Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued San Marcos and several other cities last year, saying the ordinance violated state law. That lawsuit was dismissed by a district court judge last July, but will now likely head to trial. San Marcos City Council members are expected to discuss the lawsuit at a future council meeting.
The Dems Fight Back At The Lege: During the battle over school choice legislation in the Texas House last week, Democrats threatened to block approval of any constitutional amendments unless lawmakers agreed to put the vouch proposal before voters. Now they appear to be making good on that threat. Under state law, constitutional amendments require a two-thirds majority of both the House and Senate, along with approval from voters. Tuesday, the House was scheduled to debate and vote on a measure that would better define property tax exemptions for farmers; that vote was pulled early yesterday morning. There are plenty of high-priority pieces of legislation, however, that will require some Democratic support, including a pair of bail reform bills and other property tax reforms.
Leander ISD Debating School Closures: Parents in Leander ISD are pushing back against the possibility of the district closing campuses to help deal with a $34 million budget deficit. The district has already cut 200 jobs, but more budget cuts are still likely to close that gap. Last month, district leaders floated the idea of school consolidations, even while continuing to build new facilities approved by voters in bond elections. Parents have started a petition drive to call on the district to find other alternatives, and the district says it’s working on a longer range planning process - and that any closures won’t affect the 2025-2026 school year.
24/7 Weather Center Forecast: Showers clearing the area this morning, but more rain chances on tap for your Wednesday... more showers and storms possible later this afternoon. High of 85. More of the same for Thursday and Friday before drying out this weekend.
