(Talk1370.com) -- It's shaping up to be one of the biggest days of this legislative session at the Texas Capitol, with school choice legislation and the House's effort at increasing school funding both expected to hit the floor for debate. That and more in your Morning Headlines.

School Bills Hit House Floor: It’s shaping up to be one of the most pivotal days in this legislative session at the Texas Capitol later today, with two marquee education proposals set to hit the House floor for debate and potential votes. Senate Bill 2 - which would create education savings accounts - and House Bill 2 - the lower chamber’s school finance legislation - will both face their biggest tests so far this session; supporters are optimistic, with a narrow majority of the chamber’s Republican members slated to support the chamber’s version of SB2. House Democrats are threatening a power play of their own - demanding the voucher proposal go before voters in November, or else they’ll block any other constitutional amendments from passing for the rest of the session. If both bills pass, they’ll head to conference committees to iron out differences with their Senate counterparts.


Texas AG Race Shaping Up: The race for Texas Attorney General has drawn a second challenger, after Ken Paxton announced his challenge to incumbent U.S. Senator John Cornyn in next year’s Republican primary. Former U.S. Attorney John Bash entered the AG’s race last week; now, State Senator Mayes Middleton of Galveston has announced his intention to run. In addition to his time in the Senate, he’s also served in the Texas House and is also the president of Middleton Oil Company, and is a graduate of UT Austin.

Eastside Crash Leaves One Dead: Austin Police are investigating after a deadly crash between a car and a moped on the city’s east side Tuesday afternoon. It happened on the Pleasant Valley Road bridge over Lady Bird Lake at Longhorn Dam around 6 p.m. Tuesday; Austin-Travis County EMS says that victim ended up pinned underneath the vehicle and lost consciousness after the crash; despite life-saving efforts, that person was pronounced deceased on the scene. That fatal crash investigation kept roads in the area closed for about four hours; a cause of the crash remains unidentified at this time.

Kyle Pauses Gathering Of Kyles: The City of Kyle says it’s hitting pause - for now - on any further attempts to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people with the same first name. Kyle has tried it five times since 2017, but has fallen short of breaking the record - which was set back in 2017 by a gathering of people named Ivan in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city says it’s not done trying to break the world record - just taking some time off to plan and promote the next attempt.

COTA Announces F1 Concert Lineup: Circuit of the Americas has announced its music lineup for this year’s Formula 1 United States Grand Prix… country superstar Garth Brooks will headline the marquee Saturday night concert, while Norwegian DJ Kygo will perform Friday night. After the Grand Prix on Sunday, red dirt country band Turnpike Troubadours will take the stage. Single-day tickets are still available; Friday and Saturday are on sale now, with a limited amount of Sunday tickets coming soon.
