AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Authorities are investigating a series of overdose incidents that led to two deaths in the 6th Street entertainment district early Friday morning, officials said.

Investigators believe the overdose incidents may be related to the drug fentanyl, based on preliminary details in the investigation.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opiate similar to heroin, but much more powerful. It can be in the form of a pill, powder, a patch, or in solid or liquid form, and can be lethal in very small amounts.

APD, along with Austin-Travis County EMS, are expected to provide more information on the investigation in a press conference Friday afternoon.

Anyone with information on the overdose incidents is urged to call APD's Organized Crime division at 512-974-8477.
