AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- One of the biggest sports weekends in Austin's recent history is expected to lead to record crowds at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Airport officials say they're expecting more than 35,000 departing passengers on Sunday and more than 44,000 departing passengers on Monday, as travelers depart the city after Saturday's UT-Georgia football game, Austin FC's season finale, and the Formula 1 weekend at Circuit of the Americas.

If the Monday projection holds, it would smash the all-time busiest day on record at AUS, which was set just last year - 43,243 passengers on the Monday after last year's F1 race.

"Any day over 35,000 departing passengers is what AUS considers to be an incredibly busy day," airport officials said in a statement.

AUS says the biggest recommendation is to arrive at the terminal at least 2.5 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours early for international flights. Expect lines at TSA checkpoints, rental car returns, and airline ticket counters.

So far, AUS is on track to beat last year's passenger traffic. Through the end of August, more than 14.58 million passengers had traveled through AUS, about 20,000 more than the same period a year ago. For all of 2023, AUS saw a record 22 million passengers travel through its gates.
