AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Expansion plans at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport are getting a boost, with an award of $33.27 million from the federal government to help support the airport's Concourse B project.

That funding will come from the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Terminal Program as a part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill.

The Concourse B project, part of the airport's Journey With AUS expansion program, aims to create at least 20 new airline gates, amenities, and an underground tunnel connecting it to the existing Barbara Jordan Terminal.

Thursday's announcement pushes the total amount of federal funding for the project to $47.52 million. Construction on the project is slated to begin in 2027, and is expected to be open to the traveling public by 2030.

“I applaud our federal partners at the FAA and our federal delegation for their support in advancing the Austin-Bergstrom expansion program," said Austin Mayor Kirk Watson. "I’m grateful to see our airport maintain a competitive edge in securing funding that will deliver an improved airport for Austin residents and businesses.”

Airport officials say they will continue to apply for competitive grants through the FAA and other federal funding sources, as well as using traditional airport financing methods, like airport revenue bonds, cash-on-hand and future airport revenues, to fund the Concourse B project and other expansion program projects.
