AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin Fire and other crews from across the metro area spent much of their Independence Day night responding to dozens of fires - likely the result of Fourth of July festivities.
Austin Fire officials said Tuesday that in the 24 hours beginning at noon on Monday, AFD and the 11 surrounding Travis County departments responded to 133 grass, brush, dumpster, and other trash fires, with assistance from Cedar Park and Round Rock as well. 90 of those fire calls came between 8 p.m. and midnight Monday.
Many of the fires remained small, but several reached 1 to 2 acres in size, officials said.
Crews also battled 10 structure fires, though their causes were still under investigation. Most of those caused minor or no damage.
Fire officials say they believe many of the fires were fireworks-related. Fireworks are illegal inside the Austin city limits and many other jurisdictions across Central Texas.
