AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- In what might be the first case of Austin Fire crews working to quite literally get an animal out of a tree, a northwest Austin squirrel was safely extracted after getting himself stuck Tuesday.
And no, this is not an April Fools' joke.
According to AFD, the A-shift crew from Engine 38 in the Anderson Mill neighborhood responded to a 911 caller around 7:30 Tuesday evening, who had found the squirrel lodged in the knothole of a tree and unable to free himself. The squirrel had apparently been stuck in that position for some time.
Firefighters Steven Slaughter and Shane Burton worked to free the squirrel from the tree and send him on his way, spending a good two minutes to delicately free him from his trap.
The newly-freed squirrel didn't stick around to offer a "thank you" to the firefighters, scampering off as soon as he was able to.
Kudos to Austin Fire - there to rescue those who need it, whether they've got two legs or four.
