AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin ISD trustees voted unanimously Thursday to approve a contract naming Matias Segura as the district's next superintendent - and first-ever homegrown leader.

Segura fills a role that has been vacant since June 2022, when former Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde left the district for the top job in Dallas ISD after less than two years in Austin.

According to his contract, Segura will be paid $362,250 annually over a four-year contract, which will begin on Feb. 15 and run through August 2028.

Segura has led the district on an interim basis since January 2023; prior to that, he had served as the district's operations chief, with a significant hand in executing the district's 2017 bond program.

“To be given an opportunity to lead this organization for the next several years is incredible,” said Segura after the board named him as its lone finalist in December. “I love this organization. I love our students. I love our staff and I’m excited to take this work on.”

Segura is a graduate of Bowie High School, having attended Kocurek Elementary and Covington Middle School as well. His mother served as a teacher in the district for more than 40 years as well.
