Four high-ranking Austin and Travis County officials are advocating for the renaming of Cesar Chavez Street following a series of sexual misconduct allegations against the late labor leader.

Mayor Pro Tem José "Chito" Vela, Council Members Vanessa Fuentes and José Velásquez, and Travis County Attorney Delia Garza issued a joint statement Wednesday expressing their support for the change after reports surfaced of inappropriate behavior involving women and minors during Chavez’s leadership of the United Farm Workers (UFW).

The United Farm Workers union has responded to the allegations by withdrawing from all César Chávez Day activities. Additionally, UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta, 95, recently disclosed that she was pressured into sexual encounters with Chavez in the 1960s, resulting in two pregnancies.
