AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- For the second year in a row, COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on the annual Austin Pride weekend, including this weekend's parade and other festivities - resulting in the events being postponed "for an indeterminate time."
"COVID-19 is on the rise again. The choice was made for us, and for the safety of our city and community, to put a pause on in-person gatherings," a statement on Facebook from the Austin Gay and Lesbian Pride Foundation read. "The reality of being in the thick of this pandemic again is truly heartbreaking."
It's the second year in a row that the Austin Pride festivities have been impacted by COVID-19, with last year's parade and events being canceled entirely last June.
Hundreds of thousands of people usually attend the annual event in downtown Austin, making it one of the city's largest events.
The 2020 event would have marked the 30th anniversary for Austin Pride; organizers had hoped to celebrate that milestone this year, but officials are hopeful to possibly reschedule some of the events.
"Over the next few days, we as an organization will be reaching out to all sponsors, partners, and participants to create a new path forward," the Facebook statement continues.
