AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The Austin metro area remains the fastest growing in the nation among large metros, according to new estimates released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Bureau's Vintage 2020 population estimates place the population in the five-county metro at 2,295,303, up just over 3 percent from the 2019 estimate of 2,228,106. That's the highest growth rate among metro areas with more than 1 million residents.

The five-county metro area boasted 1,716,307 residents in 2010 - nearly a 34 percent increase.

The Vintage 2020 population estimates, which are based on the 2010 Census and estimates of population changes, don't incorporate any data from the 2020 Census. That data is expected to be released later this year.

The estimates show Hays County with the biggest growth inside the metro area, with an estimated 241,365 residents - up 4.76% over 2019 and 53.63% over the decade. Williamson County is not far behind, up 4.40% over 2019 and 46.18% over the decade to boast 617,855 residents.

Travis County grew by 26.97% over the decade, from 1,024,266 residents in 2010 to an estimated 1,300,503 in 2020 - just over 2.1% growth from 2019.
