AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Welcome to the top ten, Austin.
New data released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday reveals that Austin has become the 10th most populous city in the country, based on 2022 population estimates. The Bureau estimates the city's population just shy of the one million mark, at 974,447.
New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago top the list, followed by Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, and Dallas. Jacksonville, Florida is just behind Austin in the number 11 spot, followed by San Jose, Calif., Fort Worth, Columbus, and Charlotte.
The estimates also looked at the nation's fastest growing cities, with Georgetown topping the list again with a 14.4 percent increase. Santa Cruz, Calif. ranked second, while Kyle and Leander ranked third and fourth - both with 10.9% growth year-over-year. Little Elm, Conroe, and New Braunfels also made the top 15.
Georgetown is no stranger to the bureau's fastest-growing cities list - it has consistently ranked in the top 10 every year since 2015, and topped the list in both 2016 and 2022.
"Job growth in Georgetown and across the Austin metro continues to bring new residents to our city,” Georgetown Mayor Josh Schroeder said. “People are moving here for the same reasons that brought many of us to Georgetown — wonderful and safe neighborhoods, fantastic parks and events, and welcoming people. We continue to adjust our plans and build new infrastructure to maintain the great quality of life for all of us who are proud to call Georgetown our home.”
According to the new estimates, the larger Austin metropolitan area now boasts 2.42 million people, moving up two spots to 26th place - jumping Sacramento and Pittsburgh.
