AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The first day of signups on Austin Public Health's pre-registration form for the COVID-19 vaccine didn't go smoothly, with demand crashing the site just hours after it was launched.

This week, APH was allocated 12,000 doses of the vaccine to distribute. However, officials said as of 10am Wednesday morning, more than 20,000 people had already signed up online through the pre-registration form.

"We recognize that there is an overwhelming demand for vaccine right now and I think that's been demonstrated by people going to our registration site and having challenges logging in and those types of things," said Janet Pinchette, APH's chief epidemiologist.

APH officials say those who aren't able to be vaccinated out of the 12,000 doses this week will go on a waiting list for future shipments of the vaccine.
