AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Roadways across the city were gradually thawing out after a weekend below freezing, but some of that relief may be short-lived as another night of bitter cold awaits much of Central Texas.
...An Extreme Cold WARNING continues through 9AM Tuesday...
Temperatures had risen to 36 degrees as of 1 p.m. Monday afternoon; it's the first time temperatures have been above freezing at Camp Mabry since 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
Monday's relief will be short-lived, however, as our bitter Arctic cold continues with another night where temperatures are expected to fall into the teens and 20s, with wind chills again into the single digits. That forecast ahs prompted the National Weather Service to extend the Extreme Cold Warning into Tuesday morning for all of the Austin metro counties.
Road conditions were steadily improving Monday afternoon as direct heat from the sun and air temperatures rising above freezing were helping to dislodge and clear out most of the frozen slush left on area roads.
Officials caution that some of that melted precipitation could freeze again later tonight, again causing some early problems for the morning commute.
