AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin Mayor Steve Adler and Travis County Judge Andy Brown have extended their local eviction protection orders through August 1 - with some allowances made for landlords who have been dealing with months of unpaid rent.
Under the new orders, beginning June 1, landlords will no longer be prohibited from filing Notices of Eviction if tenants have unpaid rent for five or more months, and they have exhausted all rental assistance remedies.
"We have used these eviction protections as an important tool to keep our community safe and housed as part of our COVID-19 response," Travis County Judge Andy Brown said. "We now have additional significant investments in rental assistance for tenants and landlords, and this modified order encourages our community to apply for rental assistance before someone can be evicted."
The City of Austin's Relief of Emergency Needs for Tenants (RENT) Assistance Program has $25 million in direct rental assistance available to help tenants and landlords.
"The orders Judge Brown and I have each signed still prevent many evictions," Austin Mayor Steve Adler said in a statement. "They also incentivize connecting eligible landlords or tenants to City and County rental assistance programs. These eviction protections have helped us keep many people in their homes during this pandemic."
