AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The unemployment rate for the Austin-Round Rock metro area jumped up slightly in June, though the area remains below the state and national metrics.

According to the latest data from the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin-area unemployment rate jumped to 4.8% in June, up 0.5% from 4.3% in May. That represents about 61,100 residents who are looking for jobs.

A year ago, the Austin area sat at an 8.7% unemployment rate.

Texas had a statewide unemployment rate of 6.5% for the month of June, down 0.1% from a revised May 2021 rate of 6.6%. Employers across the state added 55,800 total non-agricultural jobs over the month, with 13 out of the last 14 months showing gains.

The leisure and hospitality sector saw the biggest gains, adding some 19,000 jobs, just ahead of professional and business services, which added 13,200 jobs.
