Austin's airport announces extensive improvement program

AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is launching what it calls "the most extensive improvement program in its history,"

While air travel fell to record lows during the COVID-19 pandemic, and passenger traffic was down over 62% at AUS for the 2020 calendar year, airport officials say summer 2021 air travel activity at the airport is on track to match or surpass 2019 air travel activity. That prompted airport officials to take a second look at the 2040 Master Plan in order to ensure any expansion effort would meet the airport's recovery profile.

"With this program, we are transforming the future of AUS—without the need for taxpayer funding," said Jacqueline Yaft, Chief Executive Officer of AUS. "We will create the infrastructure and facilities needed to support our growing city and our airline partners as they continue to invest in Austin. The Program will help us build a better airport and deliver an upgraded passenger experience – one that is not only safe, comfortable, and convenient, but also reflects the city's distinct culture and community."

The program calls for an optimization of the Barbara Jordan Terminal, creating new capacity for passenger screenings and baggage handling. Additional projects, including airfield and utility work and the construction of a new central utility plant, will prepare for a new Midfield Concourse with 10+ new gates and two new taxiways - with further expandability for future growth.

More than 17.3 million passengers passed through AUS in 2019. Prior to the pandemic, officials say the airport saw 10 consecutive years of record-settings growth.

"AUS is an economic engine in our community, already providing thousands of jobs," said Gina Fiandaca, Assistant City Manager for the City of Austin's Mobility Outcome. "Through this new program, AUS will be able to meet the needs of Austinites, Central Texas and global travelers while driving regional economic recovery."

Airport officials say the improvement projects will be funded through traditional airport development funding sources, such as airport cash reserves, current and future airport revenues, future revenue bond proceeds, and Federal Aviation Administration grants.
