The fastest road in America is about to become a laboratory for the future of freight.

Swedish tech firm Einride has partnered with the SH 130 Concession Company to prep a 41-mile stretch of the toll road stretching from southeast Austin to Seguin for autonomous trucks.

While Einride has operated driverless fleets in Sweden since 2020, CEO Roozbeh Charli emphasizes that the Texas rollout will be a gradual process.

"The end goal is commercial operations," Charli noted, but the immediate future involves rigorous testing to ensure these "big rigs" can handle the high-speed reality of SH 130.

While TxDOT operates most of the SH 130 toll road directly, the two segments between Mustang Ridge and Seguin are operated by the third-party SH 130 Concession Company under contract with TxDOT.

The segment also features a speed limit of 85 miles an hour, the fastest posted speed limit on any highway in the Western Hemisphere.
