AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Former Austin City Council member Greg Casar declared victory in the race for the Democratic nomination to succeed Lloyd Doggett in Texas' 35th Congressional district.

Casar faced three other candidates in Tuesday's Democratic primary, including State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez.

"This election was about us, the power of the people and the power of our movement," said Casar at a victory party Tuesday night. "Let’s celebrate the progressive movement in Texas.”

The District 35 seat covers much of East Austin, along with the eastern portions of Hays and Comal counties, and continues south into a large portion of San Antonio.

The seat had been held by Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) since its creation following the 2010 Census. Doggett instead chose to seek re-election in the newly created District 37, one of two new Congressional districts in Texas following the 2020 Census. The district is made up of much of the western half of the City of Austin.

Like Casar, Doggett appeared headed towards victory Tuesday night, garnering more than 80 percent of the votes in early returns.

On the Republican side of the ballot, ten candidates ran for the District 35 seat, all but ensuring a runoff with none of the candidates surpassing 20% of the vote in early returns. The District 37 race also appeared headed for a runoff, with three candidates vying for the Republican nomination.
