AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The process of renaming Cesar Chavez Street in downtown Austin after allegations of abuse against the late labor activist are gaining steam.
Four Austin City Council members are calling on City Manager T.C. Broadnax to create a community engagement plan on a potential renaming of the street.
That plan is expected to include listening sessions and public surveys, as well as an assessment of the costs for residents and businesses along the street.
José Velásquez, Vanessa Fuentes, Zohaib “Zo” Qadri, and Mayor Pro Tem José “Chito” Vela signed the memo.
A number of proposals have already been floated, including returning the original First Street name. Other potential honorees that have been suggested include fallen Austin Police officer Jorge Pastore, as well as labor activist Dolores Huerta, who came forward with her own allegations against Chavez.
Broadnax is expected to deliver the plan, timeline, and other materials to council members in time for a scheduled work session on May 26.
