AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- More improvements are on their way to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, after City Council members voted Thursday to authorize up to $46 million towards the project.

The expansion aims to add three gates to the western end of the Barbara Jordan Terminal.

Thursday's approval covers preconstruction and construction services by a joint venture of JE Dunn and Clark Construction, with a timeline of just over two years to complete the work.

Final construction costs for the improvements are still to be determined, and will depend on the final design for the project.

The work is a part of efforts to optimize the Barbara Jordan Terminal, a key component of AUS' Airport Expansion & Development Program - a program that has been held back some by pandemic impacts on air travel.

Another phase of the project under consideration is the creation of a second concourse, which would add as many as 10 gates, two taxiways, and an underground tunnel connecting it to the terminal - with room for further expansion.

No construction date has been set for the work approved Thursday.
