AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- A second Austin Police officer has lost a battle with COVID-19, just one day after the department lost its first officer to the virus.
Senior Sgt. Steve Urias died Thursday from complications due to COVID-19.
Wednesday, the department confirmed that Senior Officer Randy Boyd had also died from complications due to the virus.
Urias had served with APD for 31 years. He is survived by his wife and two adult children, and was nearing retirement, according to a statement from interim police chief Joseph Chacon.
In May, state lawmakers passed Senate Bill 22, which establishes a presumption that certain public safety employees - including law enforcement officers - that contract COVID-19 did so in the line of duty.
