AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Dr. Anthony Mays, who is currently serving as the interim superintendent for Austin ISD, has been named as the lone finalist for the top job in Alief ISD.
Alief officials made the announcement Wednesday evening. It comes on the heels of Austin ISD voters passing the district's largest-ever bond proposal, promising more than $2.4 billion in upgrades to the district's facilities.
“The Board is incredibly excited to name Dr. Anthony Mays as lone finalist for superintendent of Alief ISD,” Alief ISD Board President Ann Williams said in a release Wednesday night. “We are confident that he is the perfect candidate to serve as the district’s next leader. He is a proven leader and advocate for public education. We look forward to this new chapter and collaboration in creating not only a stronger Alief ISD, but a stronger Alief community as well.”
Alief is located in the Houston area, just southwest of the city. Prior to joining Austin ISD, Mays previously worked for Harris County, Dallas ISD, and Fort Worth ISD.
Mays was named as Austin ISD's interim superintendent in June 2022 following the departure of former superintendent Stephanie Elizalde, who left the district to return to Dallas ISD.
"The chance to lead a district while putting down roots for a long-term partnership was something our family could not pass up,” Mays said in a letter released Thursday to the Austin ISD community.
"I know that TeamAISD will continue to move the work forward," said Mays. "The leadership team is committed to realizing the district’s vision and mission, to prepare every student with the knowledge and skills to thrive in college, career, and life."
AISD's Board of Trustees is expected to name a new interim superintendent. In addition, the search process for a new permanent superintendent is ongoing, with a final selection expected in time for the 2023-24 school year.
