AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting on the city's southeast side Thursday morning.

Police tell us the incident began just before 5 a.m. in the 1500 block of Crossing Place, near East Riverside Drive and Wickersham Lane. A 911 caller reported that a man in a vehicle was pointing a gun at other people in the apartment complex's parking lot.

When officers arrived on the scene, they began to approach the truck, when the driver's side door opened. Austin Police chief Joseph Chacon said the officers were quickly met with gunfire from the man inside the truck.

Officers took cover and returned fire, striking the man. Officers continued to give commands to the man to drop his weapon, but he did not comply.

Chacon said around 5:30 a.m., officers were finally able to approach the vehicle and begin administering life-saving measures to the man. He was pronounced deceased a few minutes later.

No officers were injured in the shooting. Chacon said the suspect has not been positively identified, but is a white male likely in his 40s.

Chacon said five officers were involved in the shooting, including two officers in training. All of those officers will be placed on administrative duty while an investigation is ongoing. Both an administrative and a criminal investigation will be conducted, Chacon said, with involvement from the Office of Police Oversight and the Travis County District Attorney.

"This is the second time in as many weeks that we’ve had officers that as they’re arriving on scene, as they’re approaching, are encountering gunfire that is coming directly from individuals," said Chacon.
