Embattled Hays County district clerk submits letter of resignation as removal petition remains pending

Avrey Anderson
Hays County

HAYS COUNTY, Texas (Talk1370.com) -- Embattled Hays County district clerk Avrey Anderson has submitted his resignation, according to a letter released Friday.

Anderson's decision comes as he faces a removal petition alleging incompetence and official misconduct.

"Currently, I have been facing a Chapter 87 removal suit which has been incredibly stressful. It has taken a toll on my life to where I do not enjoy hardly anything anymore. I do not believe it is good for justice and the courts for me to continue in my role currently," Anderson said in his resignation letter. "Perhaps one day I will be able to get back into the government sector but for now I believe it is best for the people of Hays County to have someone who hopefully attracts less negative attention to themselves."

Anderson, who was elected as a Democrat in 2022 at the age of 19, defeating incumbent Beverly Crumley.

In his resignation letter, Anderson said that he believes every move he has made during his tenure "has been under a microscope," adding, "I do not believe I am incompetent in executing specific statutory duties. I have made mistakes, but I do not believe leaving will prevent these mistakes from occurring. Hopefully someone older than me will be given the benefit of the doubt."

A hearing was held last week on arguments related to the removal suit against Anderson. That petition alleged that Anderson failed to deliver jury summons and subpoenas, failed to timely file grand jury indictments, and failed to send temporary protective orders to the correct departments.

That hearing was to determine whether Anderson should have been removed from office temporarily, until a jury trial could be held in October to determine if he should be permanently removed from office. District Judge Amy Clark Meachum has yet to issue a ruling on the matter.
