AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- A fatal collision involving a vehicle and a scooter rider has shut down the northbound lanes of Mopac Expressway in central Austin early Wednesday morning.
Austin Police Department officers and Austin-Travis County EMS responded to the incident near the 4500 block of North Mopac just before 5:00 a.m. Upon arrival, medics pronounced the adult scooter rider dead at the scene.

According to police, the driver of the vehicle remained on site following the crash.
Due to the expansive size of the crash scene, northbound traffic is entirely blocked.
APD officials estimate it will take three to four hours to clear the investigation and reopen the roadway, which is expected to heavily impact the morning commute.
Drivers are strongly urged to avoid the area and find alternate routes until the scene is cleared.
