AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Two people were killed Monday night in a fiery crash on Interstate 35 just north of the downtown area, officials said.
According to Austin-Travis County EMS, the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. Monday evening in the 5300 block of North Interstate 35, in the southbound mainlanes just north of 51st Street.
Police say a pickup truck or an SUV collided with a semi-truck, which caused the smaller vehicle to burst into flames. The vehicle was fully engulfed when first responders arrived on the scene.
The driver of the semi-truck stayed on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, officials said.
The mainlanes remained shut down for much of the overnight hours for cleanup and investigation, finally re-opening to traffic just before 5 a.m. Tuesday morning.
APD's Vehicular Homicide unit is investigating the crash.
