Former WilCo Sheriff Robert Chody indicted on evidence tampering charge in Ambler case

Former Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody

AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Former Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody was booked and released Thursday after being indicted on a felony evidence tampering charge by a Travis County grand jury.

Chody was released after posting $15,000 bail. The indictment charges him with tampering with physical evidence, a third-degree felony.

It's the latest turn in the case surrounding the death of Javier Ambler, who died while in the custody of Williamson County Sheriff's deputies in March 2019 - all while a camera crew from the reality television series "Live PD" was filming.

In addition to Chody, the Travis County grand jury has also handed down indictments against former Williamson County general counsel Jason Nassour and two former Williamson County Sheriff's deputies. Separately, Nassour and Chody are also facing evidence tampering charges that were handed down by a Williamson County grand jury last year - all in relation to the Ambler case.

During a press conference Wednesday evening after Nassour's indictment was announced, Travis County District Attorney José Garza reaffirmed his office's commitment to seeing justice done in the Ambler case. "I know that these indictments will not bring peace to the Ambler family. No parent should have to bury their child,” Garza said. "But we remain committed to seeing this through on behalf of not just Javier Ambler, but also our community."
