AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The average gas price fell one cent across the Austin-San Marcos metro area this week, according to AAA Texas' Weekend Gas Watch.

Drivers across Central Texas are paying an average of $3.18 a gallon for regular unleaded this week, down from an average of $3.19 last week. The average is 16 cents higher than this time a year ago.

Statewide, the average fell two cents to $3.17 a gallon, which is 12 cents higher than this time last year.

Drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.38 per gallon, while drivers in Corpus Christi are paying the least at $2.97 - the only Texas market to fall below the $3.00 mark, on average.

Crude oil markets continue to fluctuate, swinging in either direction daily; however, the overall trend for the statewide gas price average has been downward. Tighter supplies have kept prices elevated while market analysts are watching to see what the impact of inflation and rising interest rates on fuel demand will be.

“Gasoline demand fell week-to-week likely helping pump prices fall just a little bit,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Joshua Zuber. “With colder, winter weather settling in across many parts of the country, lower demand in the coming weeks may help keep a lid on gas prices even as crude oil prices have been rising.”

Texas continues to hold the nation's second-lowest gasoline average, with Georgia drivers paying an average of $3.13 a gallon. California continues to hold the nation's highest average, at $5.49 a gallon.
